One slightly strange “error” people often encounter in Power BI is a missing File tab in the Power Query Editor.

The File tab should appear to the left of Home, so where has it gone?
It turns out this isn’t an error at all but a stylistic choice. Power BI allows you to switch between appearance modes, and Microsoft now prompts users to adopt the newer style.
To restore the File tab, close the Query Editor and, in the main Power BI window, choose File | Options and Settings | Options | Global | Report settings, then change Customize appearance to Legacy.

Switching back to Legacy resolves several similar “errors” and aligns the interface with most tutorials.
Reopen the Query Editor and enjoy having the File menu back.

I can finally concentrate now that this distraction is gone!
