Power BI | Roles and security exercise | Basic role security
This exercise is provided to allow potential course delegates to choose the correct Wise Owl Microsoft training course, and may not be reproduced in whole or in part in any format without the prior written consent of Wise Owl.
You can learn how to do this exercise on the relevant Wise Owl classroom training course (sadly for the moment only in the UK).
You need a minimum screen resolution of about 700 pixels width to see our exercises. This is because they contain diagrams and tables which would not be viewable easily on a mobile phone or small laptop. Please use a larger tablet, notebook or desktop computer, or change your screen resolution settings.
Open the Excel file in the above folder and create a basic table showing data for sales of houses in different areas:
There are 5 types of building - in an ideal world each viewer should only see their relevant category.
There are two options available: create 5 independent reports or use the one report but filter it to show data only for the current user. The later can be performed using roles:
Create a role for each house type, filtering using the PropertyType code. Look in the Property types sheet to find the codes.
Once you have made the roles, check that each is working using View Roles on the Home tab:
Other user is an additional category added automatically.
Optionally save this as Roles for Rent and close it down.
