| How to stop the Power BI card image from duplicating |
|---|
| Have you come across the issue of all images in the new card visual looking the same? This blog will show you how Sam fixed this issue. |
When testing out Power BI’s new card visual, I ran into a small problem with images being duplicated.
Here we have a card showing the Sum of Quantity as the Value and grouped by the Animal column. Unfortunately, the same animal image appears on each card.

As much as I love a dachshund, this is a little much!
This image was added under Visual | Image | Select from data and ticking the column containing the matching Image URLs.

This would seem to be the obvious image choice, so why is it wrong?
One reason this might happen is due to the default Image settings.
To check this, in the formatting pane browse to Image | Apply settings to | Cards. The default setting is All, which applies the same image to every card.

This is almost never the correct option.
Instead, change Apply settings to so that it uses the same field you've added to the Value of the card, in this case, Sum of Quantity.

Now we see a different animal for each card, as intended.
The other issue I discovered was mixing up the Multi-card and Multi-category layout settings, specifically the Overflow setting.
To expand the card into a more readable format, I changed the Multi-category | Layout | Arrangement to Grid, with Rows set to 3 and Columns set to 2.

Everything seems to be in order but I want to try fit everything nicer.
There are two Overflow style options which control how you navigate the card visual: Continuous scroll (shows a scroll bar) or Paginated (shows an arrow).

The choice between Continuous scroll (left) and Paginated (right) really comes down to personal preference.
I left the Overflow on the Multi-category set to Continuous scroll and changed the Multi-Card to Paginated.
My intention was to allow the user to use the button to move sideways if the label went off screen but it had a strange side effect.

The images returned a congregation of alligators.
If the Overflow style for the Multi-category and Multi-card properties are set differently, all sorts of bizarre things can happen in your card visual.

Make sure both settings match!
Once I changed the Overflow settings for both Multi-category and Multi-card to match, the correct images returned.

Now to spend another 3 hours making this card look nice...
