What's new in the March 2024 Power BI Desktop update

Part one of a four-part series of blogs

There are updates to on-object interactions and visual calculations this month, but these major new features still remain in preview. This leaves small changes to data bar and data label formatting - and a new way of doing row-level security - as the only signficant changes in this month's update.

We've been creating our idiosyncratic monthly blogs on Power BI updates since November 2016, and also deliver online and classroom Power BI courses.

The two big beasts (on-object interactions and visual calculations) are still being updated in preview, so this month brings few changes:

New feature	Notes
Enhanced data bars	You can now change the scope of table and matrix data bars to include totals.
Data label alignment	You can change the horizontal alignment of chart data labels.
Better row-level security editor	A big improvement: you no longer need to write DAX to set row-level security.

We hope that on-object interaction will be released into the wild soon, as it makes formatting visuals much easier!
