SSRS Reporting Services | Parameters exercise | Drop List Parameters to Filter a Table of Films
This exercise is provided to allow potential course delegates to choose the correct Wise Owl Microsoft training course, and may not be reproduced in whole or in part in any format without the prior written consent of Wise Owl.
The answer to the exercise will be included and explained if you attend one of more of the courses listed below!
- Go into SQL Server Management Studio;
- Open the SQL file you've just unzipped (you can press CTRL + O to do this); then
- Execute this script.
This will generate the database that you'll need to use in order to do this exercise (note that the database and script are only to be used for exercises published on this website, and may not be reused or distributed in any form without the prior written permission of Wise Owl).
You need a minimum screen resolution of about 700 pixels width to see our exercises. This is because they contain diagrams and tables which would not be viewable easily on a mobile phone or small laptop. Please use a larger tablet, notebook or desktop computer, or change your screen resolution settings.
Create a report called Choose Wisely, add a data source which connects to the Movies database and a dataset which includes these fields:
Select these fields from the Genre table. Sort the results in ascending order of Genre.
Create an Integer parameter called GenreID and use your dataset to set its available values:
Use these settings on the Available Values page of the dialog box.
Add a new dataset called Films which includes these fields:
Select these fields from the Film table.
Add a filter to the dataset so that it returns films whose GenreID is equal to the value of the parameter:
You can use the expression builder to select the parameter.
Add a table to the report which displays fields from the Films dataset:
The expression in the header row should show which genre the user has chosen:
Run the report and check that it works:
You have chosen... poorly.
Create a new dataset called Certificates which selects both fields from the Certificate table.
Create an Integer parameter called CertificateID which uses the dataset to populate its available values:
Apply these settings on the Available Values page of the dialog box.
Edit the Films dataset so that it selects the CertificateID field from the Film table, then add a filter which refers to the value of the CertificateID parameter:
The second filter should look like this.
Edit the expression in the table header and then check that the report works:
You have chosen... wisely.
Save and close the report.
