Open a blank Power BI file and import data from the file called Car parts.xlsx in the folder above.
On the Navigator dialog choose Transform Data to launch the Power Query Editor. If you forget to do this, you can choose Home | Transform data from the Power BI ribbon instead.
The Power Query Editor screen.
You should see the transforms already made in the APPLIED STEPS list.
The things that have already happened to the data.
Apply filters to the following columns:
Last ordered date less than 01/01/2024
Stock not equal to 0
Remove any rows where the Instructions value is empty
Rename your Applied steps with appropriate names and continue to do so for the rest of the exercise.
Remove the GBP element from the Price column (don't forget that Replace Values is case-sensitive!) and set the data type to Fixed decimal.
Use the Split Column transform on the Part number column to get 2 separate columns and rename them as Country and Ref. Set the Ref column data type to Text.
Splitting columns is so easy!
Remove the Instructions column as we no longer need it.
Add a new column named Stock Value by multiplying Stock by Price and change the data type to Fixed Decimal.
Add a Custom Column to create a calculation like this.
Merge the Supplier, Manufacturer and Ref columns to create a new column called Order Ref. Use a suitable separator for the data.
Much easier than using Concatenate!
Your list of query steps should look something like this.
Always rename the steps!
Click Close & Apply to return to Power BI Desktop.
Add a Stacked Column chart as follows
X - Axis: Supplier
Y - Axis: Stock Value
Legend: Country
The final stacked column chart.
Save the file as Transforms, changes before your eyes.pbix
