When adding data validation settings to restrict what can be entered into a cell, it is a good idea to also include an input message that appears as soon as someone clicks on the cell. It allows you to give users helpful information so they know what is allowed in that cell.
The Input message usually appears in a yellow box.
The default error message that appears when a user types in data that is not allowed, is not the most helpful!
Setting a more helpful error message would help users too.
To add an input and error message to your data validation settings:
First click on the cell that either already contains data validation settings or that will contain them and choose Data | Validation:
Choose Data Validation...
Choose the Input Message tab:
Type in a title (optional) and the message you want displayed when the cell is selected.
Choose the Error Alert tab:
Type in a title (optional) and the error message you want to display for incorrect data.
Users will appreciate a more helpful and easier to understand error message:
You can include the cell reference in an error message to make the instructions really clear.
