- Go into SQL Server Management Studio;
- Open the SQL file you've just unzipped (you can press CTRL + O to do this); then
- Execute this script.
This will generate the database that you'll need to use in order to do this exercise (note that the database and script are only to be used for exercises published on this website, and may not be reused or distributed in any form without the prior written permission of Wise Owl).
You need a minimum screen resolution of about 700 pixels width to see our exercises. This is because they contain diagrams and tables which would not be viewable easily on a mobile phone or small laptop. Please use a larger tablet, notebook or desktop computer, or change your screen resolution settings.
The aim of this exercise is to produce a report showing data like this (the formatting doesn't have to be as neat!):

For each director you see a list of their films, showing the Oscar nominations for each film, the % of the total Oscar nominations for this director that this makes up and the % of the total Oscar nominations for the entire report that this makes up.
Some thoughts to help you are shown below.
A good place to start is to create a simple report:

Start with a report showing films by director, but without the percentages.
Then create two variables:
Suggested name | Type | What it should hold |
---|---|---|
repTotal | Report | The total number of nominations for the entire dataset. |
GroupTotal | Group | The total number of nominations for each director. |
You should now be able to build the formulae for your final report!
