Before you can do this exercise, you'll need to download and unzip this file (if you have any problems doing this, click here for help).

You need a minimum screen resolution of about 700 pixels width to see our exercises. This is because they contain diagrams and tables which would not be viewable easily on a mobile phone or small laptop. Please use a larger tablet, notebook or desktop computer, or change your screen resolution settings.

Create a dataset listing out the gender,  date of birth and id number for each actor (omitting the actors whose date of birth is not filled in):

Your dataset should return 337 actors

Now create a matrix to show the number of actors by gender and decade of birth (some notes are shown below):

Proof that in acting, at any rate, men live longer?

Here are some notes to "help" you!

  • You'll need to group the rows by an expression such as =left(year(Fields!ActorDOB.Value),3) & "0s", and sort by this too
  • You need to create - and format - row and column subtotals
  • You need to set a background colour for each matrix cell which depends on the value of the count of actors for the cell or else (if this is one or more) on the Gender field

When (if?) you've finished, save this report as Colourful, then close it down.

You can unzip this file to see the answers to this exercise, although please remember this is for your personal use only.
