When creating steps in Power Query, it's helpful to give each step a sensible name.
You can right-click a step and choose to rename it if you don't like the default names.
If you want to provide more detail, you can add comments to the M code of your query.
You can do this by right-clicking the query step and choosing Properties...
Right-click a step and choose this option.
Then fill in the Description on the dialog box which appears:
Click OK when you've finished.
Alternatively, you can choose Home | Advanced Editor from the Power Query ribbon and enter your comment directly in the M code.
Write your comment on the line above the step you're annotating. Comments begin with two forward slashes.
After adding a comment, you can hover the mouse over the step in the Applied Steps list to see what it says.
The small i symbol indicates the step has a comment. Hover over the step to read it.
