Winner and explanations for our July/August quiz competition
Our July/August 2025 quiz received 36 answers, with Jackie Rutherford's name being picked out of the weighted, randomised sorting hat (congratulations to her for winning this month's £50 prize). You can see the answers - with explanations - below.

In July we asked you 20 questions loosely divided into 3 categories: Business and Technology, Popular Culture and Where and When?. You can see the answers below (you can click on each link to see the source article, should you doubt my word!).

1	Bob Vylan band names	The two gentlemen shown are called Bobby Vylan and Bobbie Vylan.
2	Airline sickness bags	The world's biggest collection contains 6,290 bags, although those who got this right probably relied on guesswork!
3	Quasimodo Sunday	Quasimodo Sunday is - as I recently discovered - the name for the second Sunday after lent.
4	Double-landlocked countries	Kazakhstan (one of the world's largest countries) and Liechtenstein (one of the smallest). Kazakhstan is about 17,000 times bigger!
5	Oasis and John Lewis	Noel (currently and formerly of Oasis) composed Half the World Away, but Aurora surely sang it better.
6	Rosetta Stone	The text gives a decree establishing the divine cult of the new ruler King Ptolemy V, but you can probably read that yourself.
7	Lesotho	The value of trade between the US and Lesotho was $240 million in 2024. A bit of a guess needed for this one.
8	Marathon	The marathon distance is so strange because it allowed the London Olympics 1908 marathon to finish in front of the Royal Box at White City stadium!
9	Alpaca	In my favourite story of the year, Abbygail-Nigella Borst of Tasmania sued for not being allowed to take her service alpaca into a supermarket.
10	Mushroom poisoner	Erin Patterson's meal was Beef Wellington with mashed potatoes and green beans. Well, that's what she served to everyone else ...
11	Power BI is 10	Microsoft celebrated the event by launching a DataViz competition. They really know how to push the boat out ...
12	Sam Bankman-Fried	Remarkably Sam Bankman-Fried spent his working life trying to earn more money so that he could give more away, as part of a movement called effective altruism.
13	Park run locations	Many major countries like France have no Park Runs, but Poland more than makes up for this.
14	Whitby goths	Whitby is famous for gatherings of Goths.
15	Transport font	The font used on most UK road signs is - appropriately - called Transport.
16	Perfect love picture	The prompt for this image was "Create a picture showing your idea of perfect happiness". Clearly this is what ChatGPT thinks this consititutes.
17	Vexillology	The show about vexillology is called "Fun with Flags", but it rarely goes smoothly.
18	Blade Runner	This poster advertises Blade Runner.
19	Nvidia	Unbelievably, the value of Nvidia (at the time of writing) exceeds the entire value of all shares listed on the London Stock Exchange.
20	Salty	If you're being salty, you're behaving in a resentful or irritated manner. Apparently.

Out of 36 answers our randomised Excel sorting hat (weighted according by quiz scores) picked the name of Jackie Rutherford as the person to receive this month's £50 voucher. Congratulations to her!
