Changes for the May 2022 Power BI Desktop update
Part four of a five-part series of blogs

Small improvements this month, but welcome ones - particularly the ability to zoom in and out, and to select data points in (some) charts using a selection rectangle.

  1. Changes for the May 2022 Power BI Desktop update
  2. You can now zoom in and out in Power BI Desktop!
  3. Lassoing data points using a rectangle for a chart
  4. Automatically expanding all formatting categories (this blog)
  5. ArcGIS has improved - apparently

We've been creating our idiosyncratic monthly blogs on Power BI updates since November 2016, and also deliver online and classroom Power BI courses.

You need a minimum screen resolution of about 700 pixels width to see our blogs. This is because they contain diagrams and tables which would not be viewable easily on a mobile phone or small laptop. Please use a larger tablet, notebook or desktop computer, or change your screen resolution settings.

Automatically expanding all formatting categories

In response to angry emails, one presumes, Microsoft have added an option to expand all formatting categories by default:

Expand categories

You can get to this option by choosing File -> Options and settings and then Options, then clicking on the Report settings tab as shown.

Here's the difference this makes:

Normal view With the option enabled

Personally I'm with Microsoft: I like the way the new view appears uncluttered, and don't mind having to expand categories to view their contents!
