Using a Power BI text box to show values from your data
---
How to use the new method of adding values to Power BI text boxes
In this blog
A recent update to Power BI has changed the way you insert values from your data model into text boxes.
Previously, you had to type a question and Power BI would use the Q&A functionality to give an answer.

When editing a text box, clicking the Value button allows you to enter a dynamic value.
These dynamic values are then computed and displayed along with the other text you have entered.

The requested value appears in the text box and updates as your data refreshes.
The Q&A visual is being retired in December 2026 along with anything that uses its functionality.
As of the September 2026 update a new way of adding values to text boxes has been released.

The initial process of adding values to text boxes remains the same. You type any literal text then click Value.
Don't forget to add a space after your literal text so that any added value isn't joined directly to the preceding text.
The new method of adding a value involves choosing the data directly but with some added options.

First you must choose the data for the value to be based on.
You can choose anything from the data model, including measures.

I've scrolled through the data model to find the RunTimeMinutes column.
After choosing a column, you can then choose a Summarization option.

The Summarization dropdown becomes live for you to choose the correct function.
You can then apply formatting to the result.

I've chosen Average and added some formatting for this value.
Once you've made the desired choices you can click Save to add the value to the text box.

The added value is shown with the light blue underlining.
The choice of Summarization functions changes depending on the data type of the column. Here are the options you'll see for a column of dates:

Above are the available functions if you choose a date datatype.
If you choose a text column, in this case Title, the list of Summarization functions is different.

Here you can see the text datatype functions.
As part of the update to the text box, you now have the useful ability to filter the dynamic value. To do this, click the Add filter button after selecting a Summarization function.

Here I'm choosing to filter the Average of the RunTimeMinutes column.
When you click to add a filter you first have to chose what data to filter by. In the example below I'm choosing to filter by the value of the OscarWins column.

I can either choose data already in the text box or anything from the data model.
I want to show the result for films that have won at least 1 Oscar. To do this I can set the Filter type to Advanced filtering.

You can choose the type of filter to use. These are the same as the choices for a filter card.
Next, I can choose the Condition for the filter.

Here I'm selecting is greater than.
Finally, enter a Value then click the Apply button.

Click Apply after setting the filter choices. The returned value will now be affected.
