| Using the new sentence template tooltips in Power BI reports |
|---|
| The new sentence format tooltips provide a nice simple halfway house between the default tooltips you get in a Power BI report and full-blown customised report tooltips. |
In this blog
Sentence template tooltips are a great idea!

An example of a sentence tooltip, picking up on the region name, centre type name and total sales.
This is what you would normally have got for this tooltip:

A normal tooltip would show the values for each field used in the visual in a tabular format.
Before you create a sentence tooltip you must know what the fields are called in your visual:

Here we've renamed the RegionName column to just Region.
To create and apply sentence tooltips, first select the visual whose tooltips you want to change, then go to its General formatting properties:

Expand the Tooltips card for your visual as shown above.
You can now type in how you want your sentence to read:

You must include each field name in curly brackets: { and }.
If you get the name of a field wrong, or use the wrong parentheses, the literal text that you typed in will appear (rather than the column value for the part of the visual you're hovering over).
Here's what the extra toggles do in the diagram above:
Toggle | What it does |
|---|---|
Sentence format only | You definitely want to enable this (it's not the default); sentences combined with normal tooltips look strange! |
Bold values | On balance this owl thinks sentences look better if you highlight the variable parts in bold (as in our example at the start of this blog). |
And with that, I think you now know everything that there is to know about this great (if simple) new feature!
