This blog answers some of the frequently asked questions about how our online training works (such as what software and hardware you'll need, and what freebies are included!).

You need a minimum screen resolution of about 700 pixels width to see our blogs. This is because they contain diagrams and tables which would not be viewable easily on a mobile phone or small laptop. Please use a larger tablet, notebook or desktop computer, or change your screen resolution settings.

Online Training FAQ

Here's a collection of questions and answers about our online training courses.  If you can't find an answer to your question here, get in touch and we'll be happy to help!

How do your online courses work?

You can attend one of our online courses by joining an online meeting using Microsoft Teams.  During the course, your trainer will demonstrate techniques on-screen and you can follow along at the same time to practise.  You'll also have the chance to ask questions and discuss things with the trainer and your fellow delegates.

It's a lot like attending one of our classroom courses, except that you don't have to leave the comfort of your home!

What do I need to attend an online training course?

Here's a basic list of things you need to join one of our online training courses:

  • A computer with an internet connection and microphone.
  • An extra screen for certain courses.

Even if your course doesn't require an extra screen, we highly recommend using one!

There are also some things which aren't essential but will ensure you have the best experience:

  • A headset or earphones.
  • A webcam.
  • Snacks.

You may require more snacks than shown here.

How do I get Microsoft Teams?

You can install Microsoft Teams on a Windows computer or on an Android or iOS device.  Here's a link to download the software, it's free!

What if I don't want to install Microsoft Teams?

No problem!  If you prefer not to install Microsoft Teams, you can join one of our online courses from your web browser.  The browser version of Teams works best with Google Chrome or the new, Chromium-based version of Microsoft Edge.  Other browsers also work but with some limitations which you can see here.

Do I need any other software?

We've installed all the software and files that you'll need for the course on our training computers here at Wise Owl HQ.  At the beginning of the course your trainer will show you how to connect to a Wise Owl training computer using the Remote Desktop Connection application, so you don't need to install anything.


The Remote Desktop Connection application allows you to connect to a remote computer and use the software installed on it.


The Remote Desktop Connection application is installed by default on Windows computers but if you don't have it you can install it from the Microsoft Store.  You can also install the Remote Desktop Connection app for Android devices from the Google Play Store and for iOS devices from the App Store.

Why do I need two screens for some courses?

Some applications that we train in require a lot of screen space.  During the course you'll need to be able to see both the trainer's screen and your own screen at the same time.  If you have only one screen there simply won't be enough space to use some applications effectively.

What if I don't have an extra computer monitor?

You could plug your laptop into your TV and watch the training course on a big screen from the comfort of your sofa.


Just because you're working doesn't mean you can't be comfortable!

Alternatively, if you have a separate computer or tablet you could watch the trainer's screen on one device and follow along using the other.

You could even watch the trainer's screen on your mobile phone using the mobile Teams app, although you'll need exceptional eyesight to see what's happening on such a small screen!

How do I set up an extra screen?

How do I know if my equipment will work?

After you've booked an online training course, we'll run a short test meeting with you in Microsoft Teams.  We'll arrange this for a time that suits you and it will make sure we don't waste time troubleshooting technical problems on the day of your course.

Do I get any freebies?

Of course!  Just as with our classroom courses you'll receive a course manual, USB drive, pen and notepad.  We'll post these to you after your test meeting so you'll receive them before your course starts.


Unfortunately, you'll need to provide your own snacks.
