Using the new Tasks feature in ChatGPT |
---|
You can now ask ChatGPT to send you regular updates, reminders or questions - the hardest thing is thinking up imaginative use cases for this! |
In this blog
This blog describes how to create and use the new Tasks feature in ChatGPT:
Some suggested examples for tasks that you could create, although this blog will use a customised example.
One caveat before we begin, which I'll get onto later in this blog: although the ChatGPT website suggests that you can create up to 10 tasks, in practice (at least on my computer) there doesn't seem to be a way to create more than one!
To work with tasks, the first thing that you need to do is to enable them:
Click on your ChatGPT Plus icon at the top right of the screen and choose Tasks.
The ChatGPT tasks website says that tasks are currently supported by the o3 and o4-mini models, but ChatGPT seems to switch models for you automatically.
To create your first task is easy!
Choose one of the suggestions or click on the button shown to create your own task.
Type in what you want ChatGPT to help you with:
I often get a really bad stomach overnight which stops me sleeping, and have long wondered whether this is linked to particular foods.
The system then creates your task:
Exactly what I asked ChatGPT to do!
This seems a good use of a task to me, as it combines a reminder, data collection and artificial intelligence to solve a problem (many online users complain that the tasks feature just consists of glorified reminders, but I think this is unfair and untrue).
You can control how you hear about task updates in your ChatGPT setttings:
Click on this option from the top-right menu to go into Settings.
You can then say whether you want to get push notifications (which you won't see unless you've enabled them on your laptop or phone) and/or emails:
I've turned off my push notifications, so I'll just get an email.
Here's what a typical notification looks like (this was for a previous task I created, asking ChatGPT to send me an update of the previous 24 hours' news each day):
You can click on the button at the bottom to see a message.
Viewing the message takes you to ChatGPT:
Presumably you could apply filters (for example, "list any events which might have an impact on the computer training industry").
You can see your tasks in an obvious way:
Click on your ChatGPT Plus icon and choose to view tasks.
I can now edit, pause and delete the tasks I've created in an obvious way:
I can click on the pencil next to a task to edit it, or else pause or delete it.
However what I can't find any way to do is to add a second task! I thought this was just me, but it clearly isn't.
In order to create this blog I had to delete an old task I'd created so that I could add a new one. This looks like a temporary bug in the ChatGPT interface, and it's possible that by the time you read this it may have been fixed.
Tasks seem really powerful to me, and I'd love to set more than one up! Things I'd like to try:
Getting weekly summaries on when Wise Owl Training has been mentioned in the news (this might be a short notification!).
Getting a monthly reminder to update our website SEO statistics, and then suggesting why trends might be happening.
If you can suggest other good use cases, do post on this webpage and I'll get your suggestions added below!
