Before you can do this exercise, you'll need to download and unzip this file (if you have any problems doing this, click here for help). Once you've done this:
  1. Go into SQL Server Management Studio;
  2. Open the SQL file you've just unzipped (you can press CTRL + O to do this); then
  3. Execute this script.

This will generate the database that you'll need to use in order to do this exercise (note that the database and script are only to be used for exercises published on this website, and may not be reused or distributed in any form without the prior written permission of Wise Owl).

You need a minimum screen resolution of about 700 pixels width to see our exercises. This is because they contain diagrams and tables which would not be viewable easily on a mobile phone or small laptop. Please use a larger tablet, notebook or desktop computer, or change your screen resolution settings.

Create a new report called Wanted Dead Or Alive and add a data source which connects to the Movies database.

Create a dataset based on the Actor table which includes the following fields:

Actor fields

Use these fields from the Actor table.

Add a calculated field to the dataset to determine if an actor is dead or alive.

Add calculated field

Give the calculated field a name and click fx to open the expression builder.

Write an expression which returns True when the actor's DoD field does not contain a value.

IsNothing function

Use the IsNothing function to do this.

Insert two tables into the report and apply filters so that one shows the actors who are still alive and the other shows those who have died.

Filter alive and dead

You can test if the calculated field equals true or false. Don't forget to change the data type to Boolean.

Apply sorting and formatting to the tables so that the report resembles the one shown below:

Formatted tables

You can use more sombre colours if you prefer.

Save and close the report.
