This exercise is provided to allow potential course delegates to choose the correct Wise Owl Microsoft training course, and may not be reproduced in whole or in part in any format without the prior written consent of Wise Owl.
The answer to the exercise will be included and explained if you attend the course listed below!
- Go into SQL Server Management Studio;
- Open the SQL file you've just unzipped (you can press CTRL + O to do this); then
- Execute this script.
This will generate the database that you'll need to use in order to do this exercise (note that the database and script are only to be used for exercises published on this website, and may not be reused or distributed in any form without the prior written permission of Wise Owl).
You need a minimum screen resolution of about 700 pixels width to see our exercises. This is because they contain diagrams and tables which would not be viewable easily on a mobile phone or small laptop. Please use a larger tablet, notebook or desktop computer, or change your screen resolution settings.
Create a report called I See Dead People and add a data source which connects to the Movies database. Create a dataset which includes the following fields:
Select these fields from the Actor table.
Add a calculated field called Status to the dataset which uses this expression:
Use this basic expression.
Add a table to the report which includes all of the dataset fields.
It doesn't need to look pretty.
Add a parameter called ActorStatus to the report and add an appropriate prompt. Set its data type to Text and provide it with available values as shown below:
Make sure the text in the Value column matches the result of the expression you added earlier.
Add a filter which uses the parameter's value to either the dataset or table and test that it works.
Use the expression builder to make it easy to select the parameter's value.
Add a parameter called ActorGender to the report and add an appropriate prompt. Enable the Allow multiple values option and provide it with available values as shown below:
Make sure the Value column matches the text that is stored in the Gender field.
Add a filter which uses this new parameter to either the dataset or table:
If you use the expression builder, don't forget to delete the (0) characters that appear when you select the parameter.
Use the Parameters panel to arrange the parameters vertically:
Click and drag to move parameters in this panel.
Set the Grouping pane to Advanced Mode and select the (Static) item which corresponds to the DoD column in the table. Assign an expression to its Hidden property so that the column disappears when you're viewing actors who are alive.
You can click on a (Static) item to see its corresponding column selected in the table.
Test that your report works:
The date of death should be hidden for people who haven't actually died yet.
Save and close the report.
