| Possible new training course on embedding Python within Excel |
|---|
| Has VBA finally met its nemesis? You can now embed Python seamlessly within Excel, vastly expanding the range of what Excel can do. We are so excited by this that we're thinking of creating a dedicated course, but it will only happen if people show an interest! |
We've created a separate blog on running Python code within Excel:

One example: using Python to pick out alternate rows from a table.
This feature seems so well implemented that we'd like to run a course on it. This would be aimed at people who work in data analysis (you, surely?) who are experienced users of Excel but new or newish to Python. Here are some of the things that the course might cover:
Topic | Examples |
|---|---|
Working with cells | Using Python to create new formulae and functions beyond those provided as standard in Excel. |
Working with dataframes | Sorting, filtering and analysing tables of Excel data using Pandas dataframes in Python. |
Transforming images | Using the Pillow module in Python to play about with images inserted in a worksheet. |
Creating charts | Using matplotlib to create custom charts in Excel beyond those provided by default. |
Generating test data | Using the faker module to create test datasets. |
Unlike our dedicated Python courses all of the code would be written within Excel, not a dedicated programming environment like Visual Studio Code. Inevitably the course would need to cover a fair bit on the basics of Python, such as conditions, lists, loops, slicing and dictionaries.
We would expect the course to run from this coming February and to last for 2 or 3 days. If you think you or your team might be interested please let us know so that we can gauge interest (developing one of our courses is no small undertaking, so we want to be sure that there is a market for this training before writing the course!).
