Wise Owl's quarterly (ish) news tweet | Issue 14 - October 2014
The items included in this newsletter are listed below. Our newsletter go out about 3 times a year - if you'd like to subscribe, just let us know!
As you may have noticed, we've got a brand new website (complete with cute owl logo and revamped branding). As well as looking better, the website:
- works equally well on all devices (mobiles, tablets, laptops and desktops);
- makes it much easier to find information; and
- provides a platform for future development (such as an online discussion forum).
We've created a blog showing the techie details of the development platforms we used for our new site, for anyone who's into this sort of thing.
Any comments or suggestions welcome!
We're planning on scheduling a new course in the New Year, to be called provisionally Data Analysis in Excel, and for a change are soliciting suggestions first rather than trying to second-guess what people will use. The course will include some or all of the following:
- A review of sorting and filtering in Excel;
- Creating and using subtotals;
- Parsing data, including using text and other functions to clean dates;
- An in-depth study of pivot tables;
- How to make pivot charts behave;
- Using PowerPivot in Excel 2013;
- Using PowerView;
- Regression analysis;
- Importing from and linking to SQL Server and Access; and
- Importing from and linking to websites.
The course will include typical scenarios faced by many of our clients, such as how to bring in and then link data from disaparate systems.
If you have any suggestions for additions or amendments to the above, we'd love to hear from you!
At the end of September we moved from our old base to a new training centre closer to Piccadilly Station (it now only takes 5 minutes to get from your train to your trainer, not 10-15 as before). You can see details of the new venue here.
The new centre (like the old one) has got two training rooms, which we've currently given the working names of Tam and Popo. Does anyone have any good suggestions for better names? The previous training centre's rooms were called A and B, and we're determined to be more imaginative this time. Anyone whose suggestion is successfully adopted will win a 25% reduction on a scheduled training course place!
And finally, we're now looking for a permanent base in London (ideally a self-contained office between 400 and 1000 square foot within half an hour's walk of Euston). Please let us know if you have anywhere suitable that you could suggest.
