Booking skills assessment tests for candidates
Anyone can do one of our skills assessment tests online without charge and anonymously. However, many people want to issue tests to a group of candidates and then compare their results: this pages shows how to do this!
Please note that this is a premium feature. You will be able to create and assign a few tests to try out this service, but thereafter you will have to sign up to a premium account to continue using the service. You can see details of our premium service and pricing here.
Accessing the booking menu
The first things that you'll need to do are:
- Create an account on our website if you haven't already done so (this will take about a minute); and
- Log on to our website using this account.
You can then click on your user name at the top right of any web page of our site:

If you're viewing our website on a mobile phone, click on the wicket gate icon (three bars) at the top right of the screen to access this button.
You can now access the menu options to assign candidates and create tests:

The menu options to add candidates and assign tests to them.
Adding, editing and deleting candidates
To add a candidate, click on this button from the Candidates menu shown above:

You will see a list of any candidates that you've already created, followed by this ADD button.
Fill in the fields, then save your changes:

The notes are for your internal use. For GDPR purposes you should avoid storing any personal information on each candidate.
You can edit any candidate by clicking on the button to the right of their name:

Click on the >> button shown above to edit a candidate's details.
While editing a candidate you can click the DELETE THIS CANDIDATE button to remove them. Note that once you have assigned tests to a candidate you will no longer be able to delete them, and instead should change their status from Current to Inactive.
Setting your email preferences
Before you assign tests to candidates, you should consider whether you want to be notified when they start and finish tests:

You can select this menu option to change your email notification preferences.
Here are the options:

You can choose to receive an email when any candidate to whom you've assigned a test starts the test or when they finish it (or both, or neither).
Assigning tests
Once you've added candidates you can look at tests you've assigned, and add new ones:

Click on this menu to assign tests to your candidates.
Here's how to add a test:

Click on this button at the bottom of the search form to add a new test.
Choose who will do the test, and in what subject:

You can either assign one of the standard tests listed on our website, or one of the custom tests that you've created.
It is now up to you to let your candidate know that you have assigned a test for them to do. One way to do this is to copy the text of the email you're given (you can also get a copy of this sent to yourself):

This email contains a link for this candidate to start their test.
Note that it is up to you to contact your candidate to ask them to start their test - the skills assessment part of our website will not do this for you, as by design we don't store candidates' email addresses.
Reviewing test results
Depending on your email preferences (as set above), you may or may not receive emails letting you know when a candidates starts and/or finishes a test. To review your test results, first find the test:

First click on this menu option to work with tests.
You can search for tests by the candidate name, test name or status:

This would show standard Wise Owl Power BI tests assigned to Donald Biden but not yet begun.
If any tests meet your criteria, you'll see them listed:

Here you've assigned one unstarted Power BI test to Donald Biden.
You can click on the links above to see the following information:
Link | This example | Where it will take you |
---|---|---|
The candidate name | Biden, Donald | The candidate's details |
Test name | Power BI | A list of all tests taken for this subject |
Status | Invited | A copy of the template invitation email for this test |
When a test has been taken, you can see the score that the candidate got, and drill-down to see more details:

Click on the >> icon to see full results for this test.
You can then see how well this person did relative to others taking this test, analyse their answers in more detail or save the results as a PDF for further analysis.
You should be careful not to use the skills tests as your sole method of determining how well a candidate knows a subject. The tests are designed to be as searching as possible - and wrong answers are penalised - but inevitably luck plays a part - and there's also no way of stopping someone taking a test remotely from looking up answers.
