A summary of new features introduced in the August 2019 Power BI update
Part one of a six-part series of blogs

This was a month of few updates. Our favourite by far is that you can now group visuals, but the Key Influencers visual has also emerged from the preview shadows.

  1. New changes for the August 2019 Power BI update (this blog)
  2. Grouping visuals
  3. The new Key Influencers visual
  4. You can now choose from conditional icon sets
  5. Updating old reports to the new filter pane
  6. Features waiting in preview as of August 2019

For a cumulative list of all of the updates to Power BI Desktop in the last few years see this blog, or have a look at the Power BI courses that we run.

You need a minimum screen resolution of about 700 pixels width to see our blogs. This is because they contain diagrams and tables which would not be viewable easily on a mobile phone or small laptop. Please use a larger tablet, notebook or desktop computer, or change your screen resolution settings.

New changes for the August 2019 Power BI update

This is a quiet month for Power BI (to be expected in the August holiday season, and particularly after last month's flurry of updates).  The only two new features of significance are the ability to group visuals and the release of the Key Influencers visual.

Change Notes
Grouping visuals You can now group visuals together, making it easier to move, resize or hide them.
Key Influencers visual This visual has emerged from preview, allowing you to see what factors are causing your profits (for example) to rise (or fall).
Conditional icon sets You can now choose from a list of sets of conditional icons when applying conditional formatting.
Filter pane (legacy reports) Power BI will now by default update old reports to the new filter pane, although you can ask it not to.

Finally, here are the features still waiting in preview (a diminishing list!).
