On the minus side, the changes introduced in this update (mainly a selection pane and spotlight facility) are tiny, but on the plus side there is a huge new feature (bookmarks) waiting in the wings in preview mode.
- New Power BI Desktop features in the October 2017 Update (this blog)
- Use the Selection Pane to Toggle Visibility of Report Items
- Spotlighting visualisations
For a cumulative list of all of the updates to Power BI Desktop in the last few months, see this blog. Our two-day Power BI Desktop course always uses the latest version of the software.

You need a minimum screen resolution of about 700 pixels width to see our blogs. This is because they contain diagrams and tables which would not be viewable easily on a mobile phone or small laptop. Please use a larger tablet, notebook or desktop computer, or change your screen resolution settings.
New Power BI Desktop features in the October 2017 Update
The only two changes likely to be of interest to our course delegates are shown below:
Feature | Notes |
---|---|
The selection pane | You can use this to hide or display particular bits of a report. |
Spotlighting | You can spotlight a visualisation to make it temporarily stand out. |
There are other very minor changes (for example, you can now show more data points in a scatter chart), but they're not worth writing home about.
The problem with the new features above is that they're not much use on their own. However, they are an integral part of bookmarking, a new feature now in preview mode. Watch this space!
