SSAS - multidimensional | Basic Cubes exercise | Cube showing filtered sales by region and species
This exercise is provided to allow potential course delegates to choose the correct Wise Owl Microsoft training course, and may not be reproduced in whole or in part in any format without the prior written consent of Wise Owl.
You can learn how to do this exercise on the relevant Wise Owl classroom training course (sadly for the moment only in the UK).
You need a minimum screen resolution of about 700 pixels width to see our exercises. This is because they contain diagrams and tables which would not be viewable easily on a mobile phone or small laptop. Please use a larger tablet, notebook or desktop computer, or change your screen resolution settings.
Create a new project, and within this a data source view to include the following tables:
- tblStore (you'll need to create a relationship from this to the tblCentre table)
- msrTransaction (you'll need to link this to the tblStore and tblProduct tables)
Create a named calculation called Sales within the transactions fact table, to equal price times quantity (and curse those lazy database administrators for not including it for you).
Create the following dimensions:
- One called Products based on the tblProduct table, to include the SpeciesId attribute
- One called Stores based on the tblStore table, to include the StoreId attribute
Create a cube showing sales by species and region, but excluding amphibians (no one likes them anyway):
We've used the subcube pane to apply a filter, specifying that the species is not Amphibian
If yoiu're using Analysis Services 2012 or later, you'll need to analyse your cube in Excel to see a pivot-table-style view of it similar to the one shown above.
Save and close all open windows.
