SSAS - multidimensional | Basic Cubes exercise | Create simplest cube by reigon and year
This exercise is provided to allow potential course delegates to choose the correct Wise Owl Microsoft training course, and may not be reproduced in whole or in part in any format without the prior written consent of Wise Owl.
You can learn how to do this exercise on the relevant Wise Owl classroom training course (sadly for the moment only in the UK).
You need a minimum screen resolution of about 700 pixels width to see our exercises. This is because they contain diagrams and tables which would not be viewable easily on a mobile phone or small laptop. Please use a larger tablet, notebook or desktop computer, or change your screen resolution settings.
Create a new project (it's probably easiest, so this doesn't interfere with previous work that you've done).
Create a new data source view to contain 3 tables:
You'll need to create a logical primary key for the year table, and a relationship between it and the tblRegionTarget table
Create two new dimensions:
- One called Regions based on the tblRegion table
- One called Years based on the tblYear table
Create a simple cube showing total sales targets for each region and year:
Cubes don't get simpler than this!
If yoiu're using Analysis Services 2012 or later, you'll need to analyse your cube in Excel to see a pivot-table-style view of it similar to the one shown above.
Save and close all of your windows.
