In what is becoming almost an annual exercise we revisit the main AI tools to see which (if any) has the edge in accomplishing 5 challenging tasks, each designed to test a different aspect of the use of AI.

Conclusions and winner/loser

With one exception, our quartet of AI tools produced astonishing results for this.

All of the AI tools produced script for an explainer video, but they all said that they couldn't create the video itself. I guess this was a lot to ask for! Because of this I've decided to compare just the presentations below.

ChatGPT (less than 2 minutes)

ChatGPT produced two things: an image-only presentation and a proper set of PowerPoint slides. The image-based presentation was impressive:

They've possibly slightly overdone the marketing messages in this image.

The presentation was also great - clean, well-designed and with good text. Here's a sample slide:

Each slide told part of the story, as requested:

This combines a good slide layout, good images and well-written (and interesting) text.

Along with Gemini's (see below) this was the presentation which was closest to being usable without alteration.

Copilot (less than 2 minutes)

Copilot's presentation was by some way the weakest of the four. The first slide shows that the design is poor and the layout neither professional nor easy to read:

It also says the presentation contains "10 slides max (as requested)", but it actually has 11.

Here's the pre-course test slide (number 7 of 11):

The image is completely inappropriate, and the text lacks imagination and is not eye-catching.

You only have to compare this with the other presentations on this page to see how inferior it is.

Claude (3 to 4 minutes)

Claude gets bonus points for keeping me best informed about what it was doing:

None of the other AI tools showed anything like this level of detail in their progress updates.

Claude's slides had a nice clean layout and good design - here's an example:

The text is well written and the layout easy to decipher.

Kudos to Claude for taking the time to look at our website in detail:

This is taken - commendably - from our website.

However, as the above two slides show Claude wasn't consistent with its design, and although it was functionally OK Claude's presentation lacked spark.

Gemini (40 seconds)

Considering that Gemini produced its presentation in under a minute, the results are ... astonishing. Here's the second slide, with clean layout and a nice owl-based theme which runs throughout the slides' text:

"Secure your perch" is brilliant!

Gemini added so much extra text, most of which a copy-writer would be proud of:

What a great way of showing this choice!

A nice closing slide.

Really impressive! I would have been proud presenting this to a prospective client.

Conclusions and winner/loser

I felt that ChatGPT and Gemini aced this; the other two produced functionally correct presentations, but people would have been yawning.

ChatGPT	10	Great use of images, great design and great text
Claude	8	The presentation design lacked consistency, and the text and layout were OK rather than inspiring.
Copilot	6	Poor, bland design accompanied by poor, bland text.
Gemini	10	Very professional - the layout looked as if it had been done by a professional designer.

I have to admit that all of the AI tools apart from Gemini significantly exceeded my expectations (but then that is the story of AI really over the last decade).
