Project 2010 is vastly different from previous versions - and much better!
Specific new or changed features in MS Project 2010 include:
Project 2010 finally replaces the menus and toolbars of old with the Ribbon (or Fluent User Interface as Microsoft like to call it).
The new Timeline view sits above the Gantt Chart, neatly summarising your project schedule:
You can add as many or as few tasks as you like to the Timeline, and you can format them in a number of ways.
You can now choose whether each task is manually or automatically scheduled. Manually-scheduled tasks allow you to place tasks wherever you want them - they will then only move when you choose to move them!
The only disadvantage of a manually-scheduled task is that you have to enter and update scheduling information manually, obviously!
The Team Planner is a view that allows you to assign resources to tasks in an intuitive drag-and-drop way. Wise Owl have found that the Team Planner makes it easy to accidentally reschedule tasks and difficult to make detailed resource assignments. We probably won’t be using it!
When you want to create simple custom text fields you can now just start typing into a new column rather than having to navigate a clunky dialog box.
Project 2010 uses the intuitive filters that first appeared in Excel 2007. Click the drop arrow at the top of a column and then simply tick the boxes next to the items you want to see.
In previous versions of Project you were limited to using just 16 (fairly awful) colours. In Project 2010 you can use over 16 million colours! Perfect for when you want to reproduce your corporate colour scheme in a Gantt Chart.
