# Exercise: Show figures for the previous year, and two quarters ago

Before you can do this exercise, you'll need to download and unzip this file (if you have any problems doing this, click here for help).

You need a minimum screen resolution of about 700 pixels width to see our exercises. This is because they contain diagrams and tables which would not be viewable easily on a mobile phone or small laptop. Please use a larger tablet, notebook or desktop computer, or change your screen resolution settings.

If you haven't already done so, run the SQL script in the above folder in SQL Server Management Studio to generate a database (not for commercial use or copying) called MAM

Again if you haven't already done so, create a new project called BaseModel, and import the following tables: tblAnimal, tblCentre, tblCentreType, tblPos, tblProduct, tblQuadrant, tblRegion, tblSpecies, tblStore, tblTown, tblTransaction (you may not need to use all of the tables).  Delete any measures already created.

Create a measure to show total quantity sold, then create a pivot table showing the total quantity of sales by quadrant for quarter 2 2014:

We've applied filters to show only data for 2014, for quarter 2.

Now create two new measures:

Measure What it calculates
Same period last year The total quantity sold for the same period as the current query context, but in the previous year (use SAMEPERIODLASTYEAR).
Two quarters ago The total quantity sold for the corresponding dates two quarters ago (use DATEADD).

Add these measures to your pivot table to get:

Check that the figures are correct by comparing the results above with data for 2013.

If you want to keep a copy of what you've done, use DAX Editor to create a copy of your measures with extension .dax called Deja vu, and save your workbook with the same file name.
