Before you can do this exercise, you'll need to download and unzip this file (if you have any problems doing this, click here for help).

You need a minimum screen resolution of about 700 pixels width to see our exercises. This is because they contain diagrams and tables which would not be viewable easily on a mobile phone or small laptop. Please use a larger tablet, notebook or desktop computer, or change your screen resolution settings.

First (if you haven't already done so) run the script shown above to generate the Doctor Who training database.

The aim of this exercise is to create a single table containing all of the "best" Doctor Who episodes (ie those featuring Karen Gillan as Amy Pond and/or those written by Steven Moffat).

You're welcome to use your own criteria for what constitutes a good episode, but you will get different results if you do!

First, create either a temporary table or table variable to hold the best episodes, and use SQL to insert into this all of the Doctor Who episodes written by Steven Moffat:

Steven Moffat episodes

The first few Steven Moffat episodes

Now write another statement to add in the episodes featuring Amy Pond.  Here are the tables that you'll need:

The 3 tables

You'll need to join these 3 tables together

When you show all of the rows in your table, you should now have 65 episodes (although some of them are duplicates).  Write a query to show in alphabetical order the 15 episodes which feature more than once in your table:

The first few episodes

The first few of the 15 episodes written by Steven Moffat and featuring Amy Pond (double goodness!).

Optionally, save this query as Best episodes.sql, then close it down.
