Exercise: Create a map of transactions by town, and play it over time

Before you can do this exercise, you'll need to download and unzip this file (if you have any problems doing this, click here for help).

You need a minimum screen resolution of about 700 pixels width to see our exercises. This is because they contain diagrams and tables which would not be viewable easily on a mobile phone or small laptop. Please use a larger tablet, notebook or desktop computer, or change your screen resolution settings.

If you haven't already done so, run the SQL script in the above folder (copying and commercial use prohibited) to generate a database called MAM.  Also if you haven't already done so, run the spCreateCalendarTable stored procedure to create a calendar table.

Use Power Map (not Power View maps) to create a map showing the number of transactions per town, applying a filter to show only towns starting with D):

Now add the calendar date field to the TIME section of the map, and set the video options as shown below:

Each chart will stay where it is until the next day's data replaces it.

 

Run this video: the effect should be pleasing, if somewhat pointless!
