Before you can do this exercise, you'll need to download and unzip this file (if you have any problems doing this, click here for help).

You need a minimum screen resolution of about 700 pixels width to see our exercises. This is because they contain diagrams and tables which would not be viewable easily on a mobile phone or small laptop. Please use a larger tablet, notebook or desktop computer, or change your screen resolution settings.

If you've just created a file called Clever PowerPivot, you should be able to use this as the basis for this exercise too. Otherwise, if you haven't already done so run the script in the above folder to generate the MAM database (not for commercial use or copying).

If necessary create PosMonth and PosYear calculated columns in the Pos table to get a data model looking something like this:

Pivot table fields

The aim of this exercise is to create the Right and Wrong measures, so don't worry that you don't have these yet!

Create a measure using CALCULATE to show the total amount of transactions, but excluding those in month 1:

Measure without VALUES

Something is clearly going wrong!

The problem is that the function is removing any filter context for the PosMonth column, and then adding a new one.

Create another version of the same function which keeps the filter context (using VALUES), but then adds an additional filter to it to get the total amount of transactions excluding month 1:

Right way, using VALUES

A better answer!

Save this as No one likes January anyway, then close it down.
