Exercise: Set a KPI for each product's percentage total sales

Before you can do this exercise, you'll need to download and unzip this file (if you have any problems doing this, click here for help).

You need a minimum screen resolution of about 700 pixels width to see our exercises. This is because they contain diagrams and tables which would not be viewable easily on a mobile phone or small laptop. Please use a larger tablet, notebook or desktop computer, or change your screen resolution settings.

Your manager (him/her again!) has set a target that each product should aim to make 10% of the total sales for the company (given that there are 13 products, this is clearly not achievable for all products).

To start, if you haven't already done so run the script in the above folder to generate the MAM database (not for commercial use or copying).  Import the transactions, calendar, products and POS tables, and create any necessary relationships.

Create a formula which shows the sales for a product as the percentage of the total sales:

Now make this measure a KPI, using an absolute target of 0.1 (ie 10%), and thresholds of 0.07, 0.08, 0.09 and 0.1:
