Exercise: Simple MDX query rows and cols

Before you can do this exercise, you'll need to download and unzip this file (if you have any problems doing this, click here for help).

You need a minimum screen resolution of about 700 pixels width to see our exercises. This is because they contain diagrams and tables which would not be viewable easily on a mobile phone or small laptop. Please use a larger tablet, notebook or desktop computer, or change your screen resolution settings.

In SQL Server Management Studio, create a new query which extracts the following information from the SalesValueCube cube:

Some animals are targeted only at certain genders - hence all the nulls

The columns come from the Target Gender Id level of the MarketSegment hiearchy of the Product dimension; the rows come from the Animal Id level of the Classification hierarchy of the Product dimension!

Apply a WHERE clause to restrict the query to the tuple of 2009 data:

The WHERE clause loses about half of our data

Save your query as Simple query, then close it down.
