Exercise: Create animal classifcation hierarchy

Before you can do this exercise, you'll need to download and unzip this file (if you have any problems doing this, click here for help).

You need a minimum screen resolution of about 700 pixels width to see our exercises. This is because they contain diagrams and tables which would not be viewable easily on a mobile phone or small laptop. Please use a larger tablet, notebook or desktop computer, or change your screen resolution settings.

The aim of this exercise is to create a dimension showing the classification of animals:

There is only one hierarchy visible

To do this, first make sure you have the dimProduct view visible in your current data source view.

Create a dimension called Products, and within this create a hierarchy called Classification to contain levels for the species, animal and product:

Here we've renamed the hierarchy

Set up your attribute relationships correctly, including using rigid relationships:

The dark lines show that the relationships are rigid

Make any other adjustments that you need to in order to get a perfect hierarchy when you browse the dimension!
