Choosing between the Excel Power BI tools and Power BI Desktop courses

To say the least, it's confusing that Microsoft have two separate tools that do similar things and have similar names!

Software Notes
Excel Power BI Tools These comprise PowerPivot (used for importing data from a variety of data sources, and linking the resulting tables together to create a data model); Power Query (allowing you to manipulate data before loading it); Power View (a tool for creating pretty reports within a workbook); and Power Map (allowing you to create interactive maps, when it doesn't crash).
Power BI Desktop This standalone application runs independently of Excel.  It has less emphasis on generating pivot tables, and more on creating beautiful dashboards supporting drill-down (and publishable online).
