SQL Server 2012 reviewed

News item added on Tuesday 08 May 2012

SQL Server 2012 (or Denali, as it was called during development) has been released by Microsoft.  There are lots of changes to the underlying database engine, but at Wise Owl we concentrate on the end-user's experience.

To that end, we've published the following two reviews:

  • The SQL language has gained 14 new functions, a new Sequence object and the ability to interrogate stored files using a special type of table called a Filetable.
  • Reporting Services 2012 has gained a new name (SQL Server Data Tools, rather than BIDS), a new development environment (Visual Studio 2010, not 2008) but very few new features.

You might also be interested in reading about PowerPivot for Excel 2010.  Although it's not part of SQL Server, it will (in our opinion) supersede SQL Server Analysis Services.
