Microsoft Project 2007
Tracking a Project exercise
Average difficulty

This Microsoft Project 2007 TRACKING A PROJECT exercise is provided to allow potential course delegates to assess their suitability for the Wise Owl MICROSOFT PROJECT 2007 course only, and may not be reproduced in whole or in part in any format without the prior written consent of Wise Owl.

Exercise: Pyramid - tracking dates durations and costs

A full answer to this exercise is provided as part of the training course!

1) Download the files needed to start this exercise: exercise-945.zip (and click here if you experience any problems unzipping this file after downloading it).
2) Open the file in the folder shown above.
3) Set a Baseline for the entire project and switch the view to the Tracking Gantt so that you can see the corresponding task bars.
4) Change the table view to Tracking and then mark the following progress on this project:
  • The Quarry stone task actually took 4 weeks to complete
  • The Prepare stone task actually started on 16 February 2009 and finished on 10 March 2009
5) Use the Update Project... feature to mark everything else as complete through to 17 April 2009.
6) Some fixed costs were different to the original estimates.  Update these as follows:
  • The Dig foundations task actually cost £43,000
  • The Measure site task actually cost £4,000 (i.e. this was under budget!)
  • The fixed cost of the entire Acquire Stone phase was actually £12,000
Training exercise hint The Actual Cost of a Summary Task is calculated by Project so you may be unable to change it!  You can, however, update the Fixed Cost of a phase in the Cost table.
7) View some of the following reports:
  • Project Summary (in the Overview category)
  • Completed Tasks and Slipping Tasks (both in the Current Activities category)
  • Cash Flow and Overbudget Tasks (both in the Costs category)
Training exercise hint If you see fewer tasks than expected in the Overbudget Tasks report, try looking at some of the options for customising it...
8) Save the updated file with the name Pyramid Progress.mpp and close it down.

Thank you for showing an interest in this Microsoft Project 2007 training course! As mentioned above, full answers to this and other exercises are provided on the course. On all Wise Owl scheduled courses delegates can take away these model answers (together with their own efforts!) on a free USB stick.
