Microsoft Developer
Themes and skins exercise
Average difficulty

This Microsoft Developer THEMES AND SKINS exercise is provided to allow potential course delegates to assess their suitability for the Wise Owl ASP.NET 2.0 USING VB course only, and may not be reproduced in whole or in part in any format without the prior written consent of Wise Owl.

Exercise: Ordering car - skins and themes

A full answer to this exercise is provided as part of the training course!

1) Download the files needed to start this exercise: exercise-778.zip (and click here if you experience any problems unzipping this file after downloading it).
2) Add the files in the above folder into your web site (right-click on your project in Solution Explorer and choose Add Existing Item...).
3) When you browse to the file frmCarOrder.aspx, it should look untidy:
Exercise screen-shot 1636 We could do with some alignment to make this look tidier
4) Create a new theme called Car and apply it to your page.
5) Within this theme create a style sheet to make all text blue by default on your page.  Then create a skin file containing the following web server control skins:
  • an unnamed skin to make all table cells right justified, italicised and with a border round them
  • 3 separate unnamed skins to make all text box, dropdownlist and listbox controls have a light yellow background
  • a skin called FormField to make all table cells left justified, with a pale background and a border round them
6) Your final page should look like this in your web browser:

7) Save and close any open files.

Thank you for showing an interest in this ASP.NET 2.0 using VB training course! As mentioned above, full answers to this and other exercises are provided on the course. On all Wise Owl scheduled courses delegates can take away these model answers (together with their own efforts!) on a free USB stick.
