Microsoft Access
Importing data exercise
Harder than average exercise

This Microsoft Access IMPORTING DATA exercise is provided to allow potential course delegates to assess their suitability for the Wise Owl ACCESS INTRODUCTION FOR DEVELOPERS course only, and may not be reproduced in whole or in part in any format without the prior written consent of Wise Owl.

Exercise: Billionaires and companies - import data

A full answer to this exercise is provided as part of the training course!

1) Download the files needed to start this exercise: exercise-706.zip (and click here if you experience any problems unzipping this file after downloading it).
2) Create a new database called Wealth (or import the tables below into an existing database that you are using).
3) Open the workbook in the folder above, and make changes to it so that it will import sensibly.  Note, however:
  • Since not all of the billionaires have an Age field filled in, we will leave this as NA where entered and see what happens
  • Although you can change the D.O.B. field heading, the actual data we will leave as it is.
  • Although all of the other data is correct as of November 2006, the dates of birth have been made up (sorry ...).
4) Import the worksheets shown into two separate tables.  You should end up with:
  • 100 companies
  • 100 billionaires
  • A table containing any errors found
5) What has Access done with the billionaires whose ages contained errors?
6) What happens if you try to turn the date of birth field into the Date/Time field type?  How might you get round this?

Thank you for showing an interest in this Access Introduction for Developers training course! As mentioned above, full answers to this and other exercises are provided on the course. On all Wise Owl scheduled courses delegates can take away these model answers (together with their own efforts!) on a free USB stick.
