Microsoft Access
Joins exercise
Harder than average exercise

This Microsoft Access JOINS exercise is provided to allow potential course delegates to assess their suitability for the Wise Owl ACCESS INTRODUCTION FOR DEVELOPERS course only, and may not be reproduced in whole or in part in any format without the prior written consent of Wise Owl.

Exercise: Credit control - XL import and joins

A full answer to this exercise is provided as part of the training course!

1) Download the files needed to start this exercise: exercise-515.zip (and click here if you experience any problems unzipping this file after downloading it).
2) Have a look at the Excel workbook in the above folder.
3) Create a new database in Access called Credit Control.mdb.
4) Import the two worksheets in the Excel file as follows:
  • The Report worksheet should be imported into a new table called AgedDebt (letting Access set a primary key so your records will be numbered)
  • The Other Data worksheet should be imported into a new table called Accounts (again letting Access set a primary key)
5) Create a query using ad hoc joins and grouping and totalling to show total outstanding debt for each group, with the most heavily indebted group shown first:
Exercise screen-shot 899 Big Boss Ltd are currently the worst payers
6) Save this query as OutstandingDebtByGroup, and close it down.

Thank you for showing an interest in this Access Introduction for Developers training course! As mentioned above, full answers to this and other exercises are provided on the course. On all Wise Owl scheduled courses delegates can take away these model answers (together with their own efforts!) on a free USB stick.
