Rule 4: Using Simple Words

Wise Owl training courseware style guide: rule 4 - use simple words

If you want to show off your vocabulary, write a novel. If on the other hand you want to write good, clear English which is easy to understand, use simple words. Here are some words to avoid:

Bad word Example Better
Endeavour "You must endeavour to use short words" Try
Very "Excel is very easy to use" Just miss it out - your sentence will rarely suffer as a result
Employ "You can employ lots of techniques in Excel to format cells" Use

When choosing between two words, always use the shorter one if you're not sure!
