Problems with Outlining in SSRS 2008 R2
Part four of a four-part series of blogs

Outlining grouped data in Reporting Services 2008 should be straightforward: you just set the ToggleItem property of rows, and away you go! Unfortunately this owl can't get this to work - along with a lot of other people it seems - so we offer this solution.

  1. Getting SSRS 2008 R2 Outlining to Work

  3. Outlining in SSRS 2008 R2 - Setting ToggleItems

You need a minimum screen resolution of about 700 pixels width to see our blogs. This is because they contain diagrams and tables which would not be viewable easily on a mobile phone or small laptop. Please use a larger tablet, notebook or desktop computer, or change your screen resolution settings.

Outlining in SSRS 2008 - The Extra Space Problem

If you've followed the previous blogs in this series, you'll have a report with spaces in it:

Report with blanks between group headers

Where we've got to so far

Here's how to get rid of the blank spaces!

Displaying Static Items

The first thing that you'll need to do is to display static rows in your report (these are the ones whose value will never change):

Choosing Advanced Mode in the Grouping Pane

Now change the properties of each static row that you want to hide and display alternately, one by one:

Changing properties of static row

For each row, change its properties:

Setting Hidden to True and ToggleItem

Finally, the result we wanted!
