The main new features in the March 2017 update of Power BI Desktop
Part one of a four-part series of blogs

This is a small update, although the new matrix tool which is currently in preview mode will be a big change.

  1. Power BI Desktop - March Update (this blog)
  2. New matrix visiualisation in preview
  3. Colours Allowed in Text Boxes
  4. Percent-of-Total Labels in Pie and Donut Charts

You can see a list of all updates going back to November 2016 here.

You need a minimum screen resolution of about 700 pixels width to see our blogs. This is because they contain diagrams and tables which would not be viewable easily on a mobile phone or small laptop. Please use a larger tablet, notebook or desktop computer, or change your screen resolution settings.

Power BI Desktop - March Update

The main changes included in this update are:

New feature Notes
New matrix tool in preview Microsoft have revamped the matrix tool, although the new version is still only in preview.
Coloured text You can now change the colour of text in text boxes.
Pie and donut labels These can now show values as a percentage of the total for the chart.

There's also a feature to generate automatic cluster analysis for scatter/bubble charts, but I can't get this to show up, and don't think it'll change anyone's life!

This blog only covers new features which we think will be of interest to Power BI Desktop users in businesses.   For a full list of new features, see the Microsoft site.
