Do you get annoyed when you see the font size shrinking automatically as you type text into a PowerPoint slide? Us too! Turning off the AutoFit options is an easy way to stop this from happening. This blog explains how to do exactly that in PowerPoint 2003, 2007 and 2010.

You need a minimum screen resolution of about 700 pixels width to see our blogs. This is because they contain diagrams and tables which would not be viewable easily on a mobile phone or small laptop. Please use a larger tablet, notebook or desktop computer, or change your screen resolution settings.

Stop Text Changing Size in PowerPoint

One of the most annoying features of Microsoft PowerPoint is its insistence on reducing the font size as you type more text into a placeholder text box.  There's nothing more irritating than seeing different font sizes on different slides, or even worse, in two different text boxes on the same slide!  These AutoFit options aren't difficult to turn off, as long as you can find them in the first place.  This blog explains how to switch off this annoying feature in three versions of PowerPoint.

PowerPoint 2003

To turn off the AutoFit options in Microsoft PowerPoint 2003:

  1. From the menu, select: Tools -> AutoCorrect Options...
  2. On the dialog box which appears, select the AutoFormat As You Type tab.
  3. Select the options shown in the diagram below:

Uncheck the two boxes shown here next to the mouse cursor, AutoFit title text to placeholder, and AutoFit body text to placeholder, and then click OK

PowerPoint 2007

To turn off the AutoFit options in PowerPoint 2007:

First you need to get to the PowerPoint Options dialog box, as described below.

  1. Click the Office button.
  2. Click PowerPoint Options.
  3. In the dialog box, click the Proofing tab on the left hand side, as shown below.
  4. Click the AutoCorrect Options... button.

In the dialog box which appears, select the following options:

  1. Click the AutoFormat As You Type tab.
  2. Untick the last two check boxes in the list.
  3. Click OK to confirm your changes.

Follow the numbered steps as described above.

PowerPoint 2010

To turn off AutoFit options in PowerPoint 2010:

  1. From the Ribbon, select: File -> Options
  2. On the dialog box which appears, click the Proofing tab on the left hand side.
  3. Click the AutoCorrect Options... button.

Follow the numbered steps as described above.

In the next dialog box:

  1. Click the AutoFormat As You Type tab.
  2. Untick the two check boxes shown here.
  3. Click OK to confirm your changes.

Follow the steps as described above to turn off the AutoFit options in PowerPoint 2010.

And that's it: no more text annoyingly changing size automatically!
